The City of Abbotsford had been searching for alternatives to address the growing number of homeless people in the community. The Province of BC through BC Housing, the provincial housing agency, launched the Rapid Response to Homelessness program to create housing to get at-risk individuals off the streets and help them transition into self-sufficiency. Given government funding guidelines, the project needed to be completed in record time.
The 23,760 sq ft, three-storey modular building features 44 units, including eight units designed for people with disabilities. Each unit is private, with a washroom and kitchenette. The ground floor includes a commercial-grade kitchen, common dining area, laundry facilities, and support service rooms.
The building was also designed to meet Step 3 of the BC Energy Step Code, meeting rigorous energy requirements and airtightness targets.
The facility was completed using 33, 12’x60’ modules built off-site at Metric Modular’s manufacturing facility in Agassiz, transported to and installed on-site where the final interconnections were done.
